The buffer zone on the border with Ukraine is crucial for Russia to protect itself from shelling by the Ukrainian army, and its width will depend on what type of weapons are supplied to Kiev. This was stated by the Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of Russia, Dmitry Medvedev, quoted by TASS.
"Obviously we need to create a buffer zone for the future to ensure nothing flies. Its size is anyone's guess, but it should be enough. If the Ukrainians want to get long-range attack assets, such as cruise and ballistic missiles, then this buffer zone should extend all the way to Poland," he stressed.
On June 13, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that the Kremlin may consider creating a buffer zone on the territory of Ukraine if the bombing of Russian areas continues. Once again, Putin mentioned the topic at the plenary session of the Petersburg International Economic Forum on June 16. He then noted that Russia would consider creating a "buffer zone" on Ukrainian territory if their attacks continue.
