His statement was the first indication to the US what weapon was used.
The US is Israel's longtime ally and largest arms supplier.
The Israeli army declined to comment on what weapon was used in the attack.
The Pentagon has not commented on the reports.
In May, US President Joe Biden publicly warned Israel for the first time that the US would stop supplying it with weapons if Israeli forces launched a major invasion of Rafah - a warning that was largely ignored by Israel.
US Vice President Kamala Harris announced earlier in September that she supported President Joe Biden's decision to withhold a shipment of one-ton bombs from Israel over concerns that the Israeli military would use them in the densely populated areas of Gaza.
