An earthquake of magnitude 5.2 on the Richter scale was registered between the Greek islands of Santorini and Amorgos, BNR reported.

This is the strongest tremor so far, registered since Saturday, when serious seismic activity began in the region.

According to the initial assessment, the epicenter of the earthquake was located 16 km southwest of Amorgos. The depth was 11 kilometers.

Since February 1, hundreds of earthquakes of about 3 on the Richter scale have been registered, and over 70 of over 4 on the Richter scale.

Yesterday alone, three earthquakes of over 4 on the Richter scale were registered by early afternoon in the Santorini area.

At least 11,000 people have already evacuated from Santorini alone.

There are no ships sailing to the island of Amorgos.

Schools on the Cyclades islands affected by the earthquakes are expected to remain closed next week.

Fishermen on Amorgos have been asked not to go out to sea with their boats.

The big concern of the residents of Santorini who are leaving is looters. A 59-year-old illegal alien has already been caught trying to rob a vehicle. Burglary tools and an axe were found in his possession.

At yesterday's extraordinary meeting of the Greek Ministry of Civil Protection, chaired by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, it became clear that the assessment of natural phenomena in the Cyclades region would be daily, but optimism was also expressed about the development of the situation.

The entire state mechanism in Greece has been mobilized, Mitsotakis said.

"Many of the forces of the state apparatus have been moved not only to Santorini, but also to the other islands, so that we are ready for any situation. This will continue in the coming days, with the good hope that things will improve".

At the meeting of scientists and the Greek government, Evtimios Lekas, chairman of the Earthquake Planning and Protection Agency, emphasized that the greatest danger at the moment, in his opinion, is the possibility of large landslides on Santorini. Something that would be catastrophic, because many of the settlements are built on the edge of the caldera of one of the volcanoes.

Five areas have been identified that are at the highest risk. Specific measures will be taken, the Greek scientists also announced.
