Hurricane Milton, which lashed the US with devastating winds, has weakened to a Category 1 tropical storm with winds of 144 km/h, but a state of emergency remains in effect for parts of Florida. There is a high risk of flash flooding in parts of the state, NBC News reported, as quoted by Focus.

The center of the storm is about 60 km southwest of Orlando and is currently moving east-northeast at about 25 km/h.

The hurricane made landfall as a Category 3 storm near the town of Siesta Key on Florida's west coast, but by 1:00 a.m. hurricane-force winds had begun to reach the state's Atlantic coast, the release said.

Due to the damage caused by the hurricane, there is a water outage that has affected the use of potable water throughout St. Petersburg.

Officials say the shutdown is expected to continue until necessary repairs are completed, ABC News added.
