An accident plunged all of Cuba into complete darkness for almost a whole day, BNT reported.

Over 10 million people are without electricity due to a breakdown in the heating plant. Power outages are not uncommon in Cuba, but there hasn't been an accident of this magnitude in decades.

Non-working traffic lights, closed schools, stopped public transport and most of all - chaos. Cuba has been without electricity for almost 24 hours, after an accident at a heating plant, which had an effect on the electricity network throughout the country.

About 11 before noon, the power goes out and at first no one is impressed, because such accidents are not rare. However, the problem turns out to be much more serious and more than 10 million people are without electricity for an indefinite period of time.

"We are used to not having electricity for 2-3 hours, but this is already unbearable," commented Rafael, a resident of Havana.

President Díaz-Canel explained that the emergency situation is due to the difficulties in Havana buying the necessary fuel for its plants due to the strengthening of the embargo that Washington has imposed on Cuba since 1962.

"I'm afraid to go out on the street - there's a lot of crime in our neighborhood and now that we're without electricity, I don't know what to expect,'' said Junia, a resident of Havana.

The last such crisis in the country was 5 years ago, when the systemic lack of electricity drove thousands of protesters into the streets, hospitals with tranas were on the verge of collapse, and more and more foodstuffs had become scarce.
