Authorities in the Russian-controlled eastern Ukrainian city of Gorlovka have installed devices to jamming some of the local buses to protect them from drone strikes, officials told Reuters.
At least one bus traveling around the city, located near the Russian-controlled city of Donetsk, was attacked by a Ukrainian drone this month, Russian officials said, and three people were injured in the incident.
Jammers work by cutting off the drone's communication with its operator, making it less dangerous, although crashing drones have also caused damage in a number of incidents in the Russia-Ukraine war.
"We cannot protect bus drivers and passengers on our own, so we asked for help and they gave us four silencing devices," said Vladimir Mironov, owner and manager of a bus depot in Gorlovka.
"We don't know how effective they will be, but it's the best we can do for security right now."
Gorlovka is close to the front line and local authorities regularly report shelling and drone attacks.
