Russian interference in the elections in Moldova: Advisor to Sandu warns of manipulations - 1

Advisor to the Moldovan president Maya Sandu said in the social network "X" that there is a "huge" Russian interference in today's second round of the presidential elections, reported Reuters, quoted by BTA.

"We are observing massive Russian interference in our electoral process as Moldovans today vote in the second round of presidential elections - an effort with a high potential to distort the results," presidential national security adviser Stanislav Sekrieru wrote in his post.

The pro-Western Sandu, who accelerated Moldova's bid to leave Moscow's orbit and join the EU, is today facing a run-off against former prosecutor general, backed by the pro-Russian Socialist Party, Alexander Stoianoglo.

The first round of elections took place two weeks ago and was held in parallel with a referendum in which Moldovans by a narrow margin supported a constitutional amendment providing for the entry of the country's path to European integration into the basic law.

According to the Moldovan police, pro-Russian businessman Ilan Shor organized a large-scale vote-buying scheme in the first round of voting. The police assured that they have taken measures to avoid the scheme being implemented again.

Moscow rejects all allegations of election meddling, and Shor, who lives in Russia, has denied wrongdoing.
