Developments in Syria highlight that countries that have a strategic partnership with Russia, can count on Moscow's support only as long as they are useful to President Vladimir Putin, reports News.bg.
This opinion was expressed by German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius during his short visit to Jordan, citing the possible consequences for the region. Pistorius emphasized that Vladimir Putin is “reliable only as long as it serves his interests”.
German mission in Jordan and Iraq
During his visit, Pistorius visited the “Al-Azraq“ air base. in Jordan and then left for Baghdad, where he will discuss stabilizing the region following a potential change in governance in Syria.
The minister did not provide details on Germany's future involvement in Syria, but noted that the country's military missions in the Middle East, including around 600 troops in the region, are likely to be strengthened. Germany is part of the US-led coalition that has had a presence in Iraq since 2015 to prevent the resurgence of the “Islamic State”.
Challenges and stability in Syria
Pistorius warned that Syria should not once again become a puppet of external powers such as Russia, Iran or the Lebanese group “Hezbollah”. He stressed that the stabilization of the region will not be a short or easy process, but Germany must support Syria on its path to a peaceful future and regional stability.
Upcoming changes and strained relations with Syria
Germany's mission in Iraq will end in September 2024. In addition, the country has deployed around 300 soldiers to the UNIFIL peacekeeping mission monitoring the demarcation line between Israel and Lebanon. The region remains in conflict, with hostilities between Israeli troops and Iran-backed Hezbollah fighters taking place over the past year.
Russia's continued strategic pressure
Minister Pistorius called for a strategic and joint effort in the region, expressing the need to support the stability of Syria to prevent outside forces from continuing to play a major role in the governance of the country. Germany and its allies in the region must continue to work for peace and security while avoiding allowing Russia to use instability for its own purposes.
