Blinken avoids Ukraine, Middle East issues in final UN meeting - 1

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken began what is likely his final appearance at the UN Security Council, ending a four-year term filled with global conflicts, responsibilities and tensions, BTA reports.

At the end of this period, during which war returned to Europe and numerous crises erupted in the Middle East, the US found itself facing difficult diplomats, including with its rivals China and Russia.

Focus on artificial intelligence and Sudan instead of the war in Ukraine or Israel

At the two meetings that Blinken chaired, the topic of the war in Ukraine and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict was not discussed due to the opposite positions of the US vis-à-vis the permanent members of the Security Council. Instead, he focused on topics such as artificial intelligence and the conflict in Sudan.

Sudan - the worst humanitarian crisis

The conflict in Sudan, which has led to a humanitarian catastrophe, has presented the country with serious challenges. Fighting between generals fighting for power has led to thousands of deaths and millions have been displaced from their homes. US State Department spokesman Vedant Patel highlighted the dire humanitarian situation and the lack of international attention to it.
