Hungary lost the right to EU aid worth around 1 billion euros due to rule of law violations, as the necessary reforms had to be carried out by the end of 2024, a European Commission spokeswoman confirmed to DPA, BTA reports.
The funds worth 1.04 billion euros were intended for Hungary from programs to support structurally weak regions.
The funds were frozen at the end of 2022 after the European Commission's analysis concluded that Hungary had ignored certain EU standards and fundamental values.
To unfreeze the funds, Hungary had to implement sufficient reforms by the end of the year, including amending its laws on preventing conflicts of interest and combating corruption.
