The Russian army is destroying its own city of Sudzha in the Kursk region, where five months ago the Ukrainian army launched a surprise offensive and occupied part of the territory of the Russian Federation.
A representative of the Ukrainian interim military command said that the Russians are constantly attacking Sudzha and other settlements in the region with drones and artillery, UNIAN reported.
During the operation of the Ukrainian forces, 36 local residents were killed as a result of Russian air and artillery shelling in Sudzha, Kiev announced. These data have not been confirmed by independent sources. Another 100 local residents were injured.
Russian troops are also using S-300 anti-aircraft missile systems for strikes. FPV (First-person view) drones fly over the city like “swarms of bees“. According to Ukrainian data, Russian forces trying to push the Ukrainian army out of the Kursk region are using about 12,000 of these drones in the area.
Ukraine said yesterday that its armed forces were "launching new offensive operations" in the western part of Russia's Kursk region, Reuters reported. The agency notes that these are the first significant comments from Kiev two days after Moscow reported a renewed Ukrainian offensive in the area, BTA reported. Ukraine first seized part of the Kursk region in a surprise operation in August last year and has held territory there for five months, although it has lost some positions.
The Russian Defense Ministry reported on Sunday that Kiev had launched a new counterattack. Ukraine's General Staff, which closely monitors information from the region for the security of its operation, said Kiev's military had struck a Russian command post near the Belaya settlement in Kursk region. The strike and other recent operations in the area were coordinated with Ukrainian ground forces, which are "currently launching new offensive operations" against Russian troops, the statement said.
