Hungary and the US warm up relations after the cooling under Biden - 1

Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó received assurances from US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in a phone call that President Donald Trump is committed to ending the conflict in Ukraine. The conversation between the heads of the foreign ministries of the two countries took place today.

„We confirmed our mutual commitment to peace and my colleague assured me that President Donald Trump has the very important goal of ending the three-year war in our region. "I assured Secretary of State Marco Rubio that Hungary will enthusiastically, firmly and decisively support any initiative that can bring us closer to the end of the war," Szijjártó said in a video message on Facebook.

The foreign minister noted that "for the past three years, Hungary has been living in conditions of very serious security risks." "We have suffered very serious economic damage. It is certainly in Hungary's interest for Donald Trump to succeed and end this war. My colleague confirmed that this is one of the most important goals of Donald Trump and the US administration," Szijjártó added.

The minister also expressed confidence that the return of the Republican to power in the United States would help normalize relations between the two countries, which significantly deteriorated during the administration of Joe Biden. "During the Democratic administration, these relations reached a low point, but now Marco Rubio has made it clear that both he and the current administration are interested in restoring Hungarian-American relations and that these relations should be as good as they have been," Szijjártó said after his first phone call with the new US Secretary of State. According to him, this conversation "confirms that a new golden age in US-Hungarian political relations is inevitable."

„We did not hide the fact that the previous administration considered us enemies, so a number of retaliatory measures were taken against us. My colleague assured me that when he talks about restoring Hungarian-American political relations, he also means that previous measures taken in retaliation will be reviewed by the new US government“, said the foreign minister, citing the US sanctions against the Chief of Staff of the Hungarian Prime Minister Antal Rogan as an example.

He drew attention to the fact that the Trump administration and the Hungarian government have similar positions on important issues. “I welcomed the decrees of the US President published this week, which concern the issues of migration, peace and war, support for families, respect for sovereignty, patriotism and which are fully in line with the policies of the Hungarian government“, said Szijjártó. According to him, the two expressed their desire to hold their first working meeting as soon as possible.
