Thousands protest in Berlin against migration policy of CDU and Alternative for Germany - 1

Several thousand people are participating in a demonstration in Berlin against the proposals of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and its leader, the CDU/CSU candidate for Chancellor of Germany Friedrich Merz, to tighten migration policy and the party's cooperation with the Alternative for Germany (AfD).

Activists gathered near the Reichstag building in the center of the German capital. They are holding posters calling against closing the borders and cooperation with the AfD. The protesters are chanting against the migration policy of the CDU and the party leader. The protesters intend to march to the CDU headquarters, where the final rally is planned.

The organizer of the action is the "Kampact" movement.

"We are shocked and stunned by where the AfD is leading Merz. A profound course correction is needed - building a political majority with the AfD is tantamount to cooperation", "Kampact" noted. According to the organizers, about 22 thousand people plan to participate in the demonstration.

On January 29, the Bundestag adopted one of the resolutions of the CDU/CSU faction on tightening migration policy, which was supported by the "Alternative for Germany" party. The bloc prepared two resolutions. One of them was a five-point plan to ensure long-term border control and "progressive deportation of persons who must leave the country". It was approved by 348 deputies, 345 voted against, and 10 abstained. The document is of a recommendatory nature. The second resolution, which was rejected, would have expanded the powers of law enforcement agencies.

On January 31, the German parliament rejected the CDU/CSU bill to tighten migration policy, which, if approved, would have been mandatory.
