There is a risk of a nuclear accident in Ukraine - 1

The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi arrived in Kiev and inspected an electricity distribution substation, warning that attacks on the Ukrainian power grid could create a risk of a nuclear accident due to disruption of supplies, Reuters reported.

"I am at the power substation in the Kiev region - an important part of the Ukrainian power grid, which is essential for nuclear safety", Grossi wrote in "Ex"."A nuclear accident could occur as a result of a direct attack on the nuclear power plant, but also from a power outage", he added.

Grossi published photos from his visit to the substation together with Energy Minister German Galushchenko. There, Grossi inspected defenses against Russian strikes.

Moscow has regularly bombed Ukrainian energy infrastructure, including substations, throughout its nearly three-year invasion, although it has avoided direct strikes on Ukrainian nuclear plants.

Last week, the IAEA said Grossi would visit Kiev for high-level meetings to ensure the country's nuclear safety.

More than half of the electricity consumed in Ukraine is generated by three nuclear power plants. Russian missile and drone attacks on substations threaten the stable operation of the plants, Ukraine's nuclear inspectorate warned.
