The Finnish Coast Guard announced today that it is monitoring the repair carried out by a Russian ship of a damaged Russian submarine cable in the Gulf of Finland in the Baltic Sea, reported Agence France-Presse, quoted by BTA.

“The Coast Guard in the Gulf of Finland is monitoring [...] a Russian ship (which) is repairing a broken Russian cable“, the Finnish Coast Guard wrote on the social network “Ex“.

According to Finnish authorities, the incident occurred on an unknown date in Finland's economic zone.

In recent months, several submarine cables connecting NATO countries have been damaged or broken in the Baltic Sea.

In response to the recurrence of these incidents, NATO announced last month that it was launching a patrol mission to protect this sensitive underwater infrastructure.

Planes, ships and drones have been sent to the area as part of a new operation called “Baltic Watch“.
