The EU will respond firmly and proportionately to the tariffs introduced by the US, said today the European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security Maroš Šefčovič in a speech to MEPs in the European Parliament in Strasbourg, BTA reported.
The US President is imposing a 25 percent tariff on aluminum and steel imports. We deeply regret this, in our opinion the tariffs are unjustified, Šefčovič said. According to him, the tariffs are taxes and are not beneficial to consumers, because they will lead to an increase in prices and an increase in inflation.
Everyone loses from this, Šefčovič summarized. We evaluate the announced measures, we will respond firmly and proportionately, he said. We are ready for a constructive dialogue, the European Commissioner added.
The world is becoming increasingly complex and unpredictable, the challenges require international cooperation based on rules. The World Trade Organization must be at the center of the search for solutions. Business needs honesty and clear rules. We will keep all communication channels open. The EU is ready for any challenges that may arise in the field of trade. When necessary, we will defend our openness, industry and single market, the European Commissioner pointed out.
