British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is ready to deploy thousands of British soldiers as part of a peacekeeping force in Ukraine for a long period, the Times newspaper reports, citing its sources.
A senior UK government source said that “this would be a long-term commitment“, and British officials talked about “years“. The timeframe “which would be needed to sustain the peace agreement” is questionable, he said.
Starmer had previously said that guarantees from the US were needed for the deployment of British and other European troops in the country, the publication recalls. US President Donald Trump has repeatedly refused to give such guarantees, the newspaper notes.
On March 15, after an online summit on Ukraine, Starmer announced that military leaders from the "coalition of the willing" countries would meet in London on March 20 to discuss the operational details of sending troops to Ukraine. The head of the British government indicated that a number of countries had made "specific commitments" to participate in the "peacekeeping force" mission in Ukraine, without disclosing details of the agreements.
