A humorous petition suggesting that Denmark buy California in response to US President Donald Trump's desire to "take" the autonomous Danish territory of Greenland has collected 200,000 signatures, Agence France-Presse reported.
Paraphrasing Trump's slogan, the petition calls for "Make California Great Again."
"Buy it from Trump, through the most massive campaign ever," suggests the website denmarkification.com.
Why California? Just because of her time, technology and avocado toast, the website says.
Let's not forget “Disneyland“, which in the petition is renamed “Hans Christian Andersenland“, AFP noted.
“Mickey Mouse with a Viking helmet? Yes, thank you!“, is added in the reasons for the petition.
According to the anonymous authors of the petition “Trump can sell (California)“. “Let's be honest“, they write. “Trump is not the biggest fan of California. And as for the people's desire? Well, let's face it - when has that stopped him?“, the authors of the humorous petition write.
A little before 10 a.m. (11:00 Bulgarian time) 204,000 people had signed the petition, with the goal of reaching half a million.
Since late December, the US president has repeatedly reiterated his desire to annex the huge Arctic island, whose leaders, supported by the Danish government, have announced that it is not for sale.
On March 11, local elections will be held in Greenland. The Greenland parliament expressed concern about possible foreign interference, yesterday passing a law banning anonymous or foreign donations to political parties, AFP notes.
