A state of emergency was declared on the island of Anafi in the Aegean Sea today to create an opportunity for urgent management of the needs and consequences of increased seismic activity in the region, reports the newspaper „Kathimerini“.
This is the third island in the region to declare a state of emergency. This was done more than a week ago on the island of Santorini, and on the island of Amorgos – yesterday, the newspaper recalls.
According to the decision of the Secretary General of Civil Protection Vassilis Papageorgiou, the state of emergency on the island of Anafi comes into effect immediately and will last until March 13, 2025.
Since January 26, over 14,000 earthquakes have been registered in the area between the islands of Santorini and Amorgos, and on February 9 alone, over 1,100 tremors were detected.
