Kaia Kalas: Russia hit Chernobyl nuclear power plant, Putin does not want peace - 1

The European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaia Kalas accused Russia of the strike on the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, Agence France-Presse reported.

Earlier today, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Russian forces hit the former nuclear power plant, which suffered an accident in 1986. Russia, for its part, rejected the Ukrainian accusations as "another falsification".

Kaia Kalas said, arriving at the Munich Security Conference, that the attack "clearly shows" that Moscow "does not want peace". Europeans "must stand firm and realize what is at stake," she stressed.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said earlier today that Russian forces had struck the radiation shield of the former Chernobyl nuclear power plant, DPA reported.

According to him, the drone attack used a high-explosive warhead, which damaged the protective structure covering the damaged reactor. It was there that the worst nuclear disaster in history occurred almost 40 years ago.

The structure was built to prevent radiation leakage from the fourth reactor after the major accident on April 26, 1986.

The fire that broke out after the attack has been extinguished, and no increase in the radiation background has been reported so far, Zelensky reported.

Dmitry Peskov told journalists in Moscow that he did not have accurate information about the alleged incident, but stressed that there was no question of striking any nuclear infrastructure, and that Russia does not attack nuclear power plants.
