United States Vice President JD Vance told reporters after meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the Munich Security Conference that Washington wants to "achieve a sustainable, lasting peace" in Ukraine, BNR reported.

"We want the war to end and the killing to stop, but we want to achieve a sustainable, lasting peace, not one that will lead Eastern Europe to a new conflict in just a few years", Vance said.

When asked about the prospects for peace in the event that Zelensky remains in his position and refuses to talk to Russian President Vladimir Putin, the US vice president stressed that "it is important that we come together and start having the talks that will be necessary to end this war".

However, he indicated that he would not provide more details yet, as he wants to "keep those options for the negotiators to bring the war to its conclusion".

Zelensky noted that the two discussed how Ukraine would be protected from a future Russian aggression.

"We need to talk more and make more efforts to prepare a plan on how to stop Putin. We really want peace, but we need real guarantees of security," he said.
