Hundreds of weather forecasters in the United States and other federal employees at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration who are on probation were fired yesterday afternoon on the recommendation of the new Department of Government Efficiency, the Associated Press reported, quoted by BTA, citing statements by American meteorologists.
Federal employees who were not fired said that the afternoon layoffs included forecasters who prepare important local weather forecasts at National Weather Service offices across the country.
The cuts at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration appear to be taking place in two stages - the first includes 500 people, and the second - more 800 people, said Craig McLean, a former chief scientist in the administration. That's about 10% of its entire workforce.
