Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel has called for Europe to unite in the face of growing political challenges, DPA reports. In an interview with the Rheinische Post, she stressed that cohesion is key to preventing Europe from falling apart "into dust and fluff," BTA reports.
Merkel, a representative of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), emphasized migration as a common European responsibility that can only be solved through cooperation with the EU's neighboring countries.
She also commented on the results of the recent elections in Germany, expressing satisfaction with her party's victory. However, Merkel expressed concern about the growing influence of the far right, stressing that the weakening of the political center is a worrying trend.
The former chancellor expressed hope that negotiations between the Christian Democrats and the Social Democrats would lead to the successful formation of a new government. She also supported the planned increase in defense spending agreed in the coalition talks.
