British police said they had charged the Russian captain of a container ship that hit a US tanker earlier this week, Reuters reported, quoted by NOVA.
The captain of the Portuguese-flagged vessel "Soullong", 59-year-old Russian Vladimir Motin, has been charged with criminal negligence and manslaughter and will remain in custody to appear at Hull Magistrates' Court on Saturday, police said.
The collision between the two ships took place on Monday. The cargo ship "Soullong" was carrying sodium cyanide. It was sailing under the Portuguese flag and was owned by the German company “Ernst Rus“.
The oil tanker it hit was chartered by the US military, the agencies noted. The tanker "Stena Immaculate" was at anchor 10 miles (16 km) off the city of Hull in Yorkshire, England, when it was hit by "Soullong", said "Crowley", the company operating the oil tanker.
