The number of illegal border crossings between the United States and Mexico reached a record low in March, the New York Post reported, citing sources from the US Department of Homeland Security.
In March, border agents registered only about 7,000 illegal entry attempts, compared to 137,000 in the same month last year. It is noted that the sharp decline is due to the policy of the administration of US President Donald Trump, which since late January has tightened control over border crossings by illegal immigrants.
Meanwhile, Immigration and Customs Enforcement has faced overcrowding in its detention centers and has asked Congress for funds for additional capacity to support its campaign of mass deportations. In the first 50 days of the new policy, 32,000 arrests were made.
