The new US Permanent Representative to NATO, Ambassador Matthew Whitaker, stated that the United States remains fully committed to the alliance and to Article 5 of the Washington Treaty. This was stated in an official statement from the US delegation to NATO on the occasion of his inauguration, BTA reports.
“I am ready to start work immediately and look forward to helping the alliance undertake the necessary lasting changes“, Whitaker said. He stressed that his main priorities will be promoting peace and stability through strength, burden-sharing among allies, increasing defense investments, and supporting Europe's leading role in securing lasting peace and rebuilding Ukraine.
“NATO's viability is based on each Ally contributing its fair share,“ the new ambassador stressed.
The statement recalls that Whitaker has held various key positions in the US administration – he was acting US attorney general (2018-2019), chief of staff to Attorney General Jeff Sessions, and federal attorney for Iowa in the George W. Bush administration (2004-2009).
