The militia formations, part of the 8th Brigade of the former Syrian army, announced their disbandment and submission to the security forces of the transitional government in Damascus.
This is stated in a statement by their representative Captain Mohammed al-Qaderi, quoted by the Asharq al-Awsat newspaper.
“Officers and soldiers of the 8th Brigade are handing over all their weapons, headquarters and barracks to the Syrian authorities, they will be subordinate to the Ministry of Defense of the Republic“, the text says.
Earlier, security forces established control over the city of Bosra al-Sham (110 km from Damascus) in southern Syria, where skirmishes were taking place in a number of neighborhoods and a curfew was imposed. Sheikhs of local tribes turned to Damascus for help and demanded the withdrawal of militias that have controlled the southern province of Daraa since 2018.
The 8th Brigade of the former Syrian Army was formed at the time by fighters of opposition units who concluded a truce with local authorities, the areas under their control were completely autonomous.
In December 2024. The militias supported the overthrow of the regime of former President Bashar al-Assad, but then refused to swear allegiance to the new administration in Damascus, led by Ahmed al-Sharaa, and preferred to remain independent.
On April 12, after reaching an agreement with the sheikhs of local tribes, they agreed to hand over heavy and medium weapons to the security forces in the cities of Msayfara, Saida, Al-Jiza and Al-Sahwa.
Meanwhile, it became clear that the former commander of the disbanded 8th Brigade, Ahmed al-Awda, had fled in an unknown direction, fearing arrest.
