The United States will abandon its efforts to ensure peace in Ukraine unless a clear path to peace emerges soon. This was stated by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in a telephone conversation with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
“The Secretary emphasized that our country is committed to helping end the war, but will withdraw from its peace mediation efforts. Unless a clear path to peace emerges soon, the United States will withdraw from peace mediation efforts“, said State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce in a written statement.
According to her, Rubio informed Rutte of “the peace proposal presented yesterday to the Ukrainian delegation in Paris and to Russian officials by telephone”. “The Secretary of State expressed the hope of President Trump and the United States that this proposal will be accepted and will lead to a strong and lasting peace in Ukraine“, the diplomat emphasized.
On April 17, French President Emmanuel Macron met with Rubio and the US President's special envoy Stephen Witkoff in Paris. According to the Elysee Palace, "constructive negotiations" helped to "reconcile positions" on the issue of resolving the conflict in Ukraine. After the meeting, Rubio called Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
The next meeting of representatives of the five countries is scheduled for next week in London, Agence France-Presse reported.
US President Donald Trump believes that there is currently "a good chance" to resolve the crisis in Ukraine.
“I think we have a good chance of resolving the problem,“ he told reporters at the White House.
