The Electoral Commission of Ecuador has declared the current head of state Daniel Noboa the winner of the presidential election.
The candidate of the leftist movement "Civil Revolution" Luisa Gonzalez said she did not recognize the results of the vote count.
“On behalf of the people we represent, we do not accept the results presented by the National Electoral Council“, she told her supporters.
Gonzalez is demanding a recount.
According to the results announced by the National Electoral Council after processing 71.82% of the protocols, Noboa is supported by 56.31% of voters, while his rival Luisa Gonzalez, a candidate for the leftist “Civil Revolution“ movement, receives 43.69%. The difference between the candidates exceeds 900,000 votes.
Noboa was elected in early presidential elections in October 2023. His rise to power coincided with an escalating security crisis in the country. In January 2024, the head of state signed a decree recognizing the existence of an internal armed conflict and ordered the neutralization of 22 criminal groups. If re-elected, he promises to continue his security policy, including the construction of mega-prisons for especially dangerous criminals.
Gonzalez, who held various positions in the government of former President Rafael Correa, who ruled between 2007-2017, accuses Noboa of failing to fulfill campaign promises and of an authoritarian style of governing the country. Gonzalez proposed fighting the causes of growing crime - poverty and inequality - and rebuilding the Ministry of Justice. She promised to focus on the development of renewable energy sources, restoring state control over hydroelectric power plants and diversifying the economy.
