Unusual for the season snow fell over the weekend in the mountainous regions of Cyprus, reports the Cypriot edition of “Kathimerini“. On the island, known for its warm climate, snow is a rare occurrence, especially so late in spring.
On social networks, meteorologists commented that they could not remember the last time there was such a snowfall in April.
According to Kitasweather, the snow began in the morning hours on Sunday, and the snow cover in many areas of the island's highest mountain, Troodos, reached about 10 cm. On the highest peak of the mountain, Olympus (not to be confused with the mountain in mainland Greece), the snow has accumulated 15 cm.
The cold wave has also affected Turkey in recent days, where there are serious concerns that the unusual spring frosts have caused major damage to agricultural crops.
