Russian forces are advancing along the front lines in Ukraine, combining the brute force of the Red Army with modern technology, writes The Wall Street Journal, in an article titled: "Paving the Way: An Illustrated Guide to Russian Combat Tactics".
According to the newspaper, the Russian way of waging war relies on unmanned aircraft to identify targets and the power of bombs and artillery to pave the way for infantry to seize Ukrainian territory.
"Each element of the attack supports the others, taking place simultaneously or in waves. This creates a snowball effect, forcing the Ukrainian military to retreat,“ the article states.
The result of such tactics is a grueling offensive on destroyed Ukrainian cities and villages, which costs thousands of people killed and wounded every week, the journalists write.
Hundreds of Russian reconnaissance drones fly over the front line at any given moment.
In particular, the “Orlan“ unmanned aerial vehicles hang almost constantly in the sky near the front line, trying to identify key strongholds or command centers of the Ukrainian armed forces. But for several months now, the Ukrainians have been shooting down these drones using small drones loaded with explosives.
As soon as the Russians receive intelligence, Russian planes take off from airfields deep inside Russia, carry Soviet bombs weighing up to 3 tons, equipped with guidance systems, and drop them.
From the very beginning of the war, Russia has had an advantage in artillery, allowing it to strike Ukrainian troops and equipment. The artillery is then supplemented by strike drones, such as the "Lancet", which are effective against Ukrainian armored vehicles and artillery.
"They also use artillery and drones to strike vehicles that are bringing fresh troops or supplies to the front line or trying to evacuate the wounded," the newspaper wrote.
The WSJ notes that Russian commanders often send soldiers to the front line in small, fast vehicles such as motorcycles. They rush forward with the main goal of surviving long enough to identify the positions of the Ukrainian soldiers who are firing at them. Russian artillery can then target the Ukrainian positions.
