The Ministry of Interior of Serbia announced that 514 people died in road accidents in the country last year, including 16 children, BTA reports.

The data was released on the occasion of Road Traffic Accident Prevention Week, which is celebrated worldwide from April 21 to 27.

According to the Ministry of Interior, almost half of the victims are pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists - the most vulnerable road users. In addition, every fourth fatality was under the age of 30.

As part of the campaign, traffic police officers will conduct preventive activities in conjunction with schools, health facilities and other organizations.

The goal is to promote safe behavior on the road, paying special attention to compliance with speed limits, the use of seat belts and the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol.

The Prevention Week aims to raise public awareness about the serious consequences of road accidents - both for the victims, their families and the entire society.

According to the World Health Organization, road accidents are the leading cause of death and serious injuries in children and young people under the age of 24.
