EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jorgensen acknowledged that Europe is still dependent on Russian gas.
"It is obvious that we are still dependent on Russian gas", he said in an interview with the portal Table.Media. At the same time, Jorgensen said that "this is unacceptable for political, moral and security reasons". The European Commissioner said he would soon present a roadmap for phasing out Russian gas.
Jørgensen stressed that Europe also depends on the United States for supplies of liquefied natural gas (LNG).
“First of all, we have to acknowledge that we are now dependent on the United States for LNG supplies“, he said. The European Commissioner also expressed confidence that “there are opportunities to import even more gas from the United States“.
In May 2022, the European Union launched the REPowerEU program, aimed at ending dependence on Russian gas by 2027.
