The US State Department is increasing its support for Taiwan's political ambitions under the Donald Trump administration despite the historical policy of “one China“, said China's permanent representative to the UN in Geneva, Chen Xu.
“To be honest, we must be vigilant on Taiwan-related issues. You may have noticed that the US State Department website has removed the key phrase that has been used for many years: “We do not support Taiwan independence“... They have increased their emphasis on Taiwan's so-called “significant participation“ in international organizations. At the same time, it appears that the State Department, academic institutions, and non-governmental organizations are conducting a joint campaign to deny the fact that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China,” he said.
The situation surrounding Taiwan escalated after Nancy Pelosi, then Speaker of the US House of Representatives, visited the island in early August 2022. China, which considers the island part of its territory, condemned Pelosi’s visit as US support for Taiwanese separatism and has conducted large-scale military exercises.
