The purpose of the British military contingent, if deployed in Ukraine, will be to provide training to the Ukrainian army rather than to participate in combat operations.
This is what the UK Defense Secretary John Healy promised.
"We expect these objectives to be aimed at restoring a modern and combat-ready armed forces of Ukraine rather than conducting combat operations," the minister was quoted as saying by The Telegraph.
Healy has written a letter in response to the Island's shadow Defense Secretary James Cartlidge, who offers the military contingent of the "coalition of the willing" to be granted a derogation from the provisions of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) in order to avoid possible legal action by Russia against the British military.
The newspaper notes that Healey's words "seem to confirm speculation that the ambitions of the "coalition of the willing" are moderate".
The Telegraph recalls that in March, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the military's mission as a "deterrent", stating that British "troops will be on the ground and planes in the sky".
On the other hand, Healey notes that the planning of the British military's participation is focused on helping Ukraine "revive a military force capable of deterring future Russian aggression".
"British troops are now expected to be located in the western part of the country, far from the borders," the media noted.
