The ruling Liberal Party of Prime Minister Mark Carney is leading in the early general elections in Canada. This is indicated by the first data from the National Election Commission.

Currently, data is coming in from polling stations in Atlantic Canada, where voting has already ended. The Liberals are currently winning in 15 of the 343 electoral districts in Canada, while the main opposition Conservative Party is winning in five. Representatives of other parties have not yet received a single seat.

The residents of Newfoundland, the easternmost point of Canada, finished voting first at 1:00 Bulgarian time on April 29. The last polling stations in the country will close at 4:00 p.m.

Canada is holding its 45th election for the House of Commons (the lower house of parliament). The race is for 343 seats - to form a majority government, the winner must win 172 seats. The leader of the winning party will become the country's prime minister.

The next election was supposed to be held in October 2025, but after former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau resigned as prime minister and leader of the ruling Liberal Party of Canada in early March, his successor Mark Carney announced a snap election for April 28.
