Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said that almost 50% of the country's electricity supply has been restored after a major outage on Monday.
“At the moment, according to the operator, almost 50% of the power has been restored“, he said during a press conference.
Power is being restored in Madrid after a shocking blackout, with some streets now lit, but others not yet. Traffic lights in the city center are also working.
A major power outage was reported in Spain on Monday afternoon. Rail services, airports, the metro and all public transport were disrupted. Classes in some regions of the country have been canceled for today.
The reasons for what happened are still unknown. According to the newspaper El País, this is the worst power outage in the history of Spain.
The power supply problems have not affected the operation of essential services in Portugal, said the country's acting Prime Minister Luis Montenegro.
“Despite all the difficulties caused by the unprecedented crisis, key departments have continued to carry out their duties,“ he was quoted as saying by the local newspaper Diário de Notícias.
Lisbon has begun restoring power grids after power was restored in Porto and Coimbra, local television channel SIC Notícias reported.
It is noted that power supply is also being restored in the suburbs of the capital - in the town of Odivelas, northwest of Lisbon.
