German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius is counting on continued US support for Ukraine's defense against Russian aggression, emphasizing that the conflict goes far beyond the question of Ukraine's survival and affects the security of all of Europe, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.
In an interview with broadcaster RTL, Pistorius said that Europe's security has been a "top priority" for the United States since the end of World War II. He expressed confidence that this commitment would be maintained in the future.
Regarding concerns that the US may reduce its military and financial support for Ukraine, the minister noted:
„We will do everything possible to compensate for such a development, but first we will conduct an active campaign to convince the Americans to remain engaged.“
The social democrat Pistorius also expressed skepticism regarding the unilateral ceasefire in Ukraine announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin for the period from May 8 to 10 - a date coinciding with the 80th anniversary of the victory over the Third Reich.
The minister emphasized that the previous experience with similar statements by the Kremlin was not encouraging. He recalled that the Easter truce announced by Putin was not respected.
„Now he is announcing a new truce. "We will see whether it will be respected, especially when it comes to attacks on critical infrastructure and civilians in cities," Pistorius said.
