Cuba's President Miguel Diaz-Canel has inaugurated the country's first solar energy park in the municipality of Cotoro in Havana.
“We have inaugurated the first of the photovoltaic solar parks that will be ready throughout the country within a year and will provide more than 1,000 MW of energy in total“, he wrote on his X page. It also noted that restoring the national electricity grid, which has been experiencing serious disruptions in recent months, “is a priority and this is one of the safest paths.“
The park, called "Medical School", is located in Cotoro. More than 20 companies participated in its construction, and at the time of launch it demonstrated a capacity of 21 MW, the report said.
The Cuban authorities have repeatedly stressed the importance of developing alternative energy sources in the country, which is experiencing serious difficulties in the electricity sector due to the severe wear and tear of power plants, as well as problems with fuel supplies, the main reason for which the island considers the long-term trade and economic embargo by the United States.
In November 2024 Russian trade representative in Cuba Sergey Baldin announced that interested Russian companies are offering Cuba to establish cooperation in the field of using alternative energy sources, including considering an investment project for the construction of solar power plants.
