On the professional holiday of the State Agency for National Security (DANS), Gen. Atanas Atanasov called for the resignation of the agency's management. In a post on Facebook, he accused the management of violating basic principles such as political neutrality, objectivity and impartiality.
The reason for the criticism was the proposal by DANS to amend the Law on the Protection of Classified Information. According to Gen. Atanasov's project aims to return the indefinite state secret and introduces the possibility of removing mayors who do not submit documents for verification of reliability or are denied access to classified information.
"That is why in the Agreement on the Governance of the Country we highlight as a top priority the reform of the security services, which includes updating the country's National Security Strategy, active counteraction and neutralization of the operations of Russian and other malicious special services conducted on the territory of Bulgaria, introduction of an effective system for checking employees for integrity, in order to limit corruption practices and loyalty to the Bulgarian national interest, change the leadership of the security services with individuals with proven independence, high morale and professional capacity, who will work for their modernization.
„Support for this reform will be a test of the presence of political will for change“, emphasizes Atanasov.
