Reuters: EU wants to change methane emissions rules to buy more liquefied natural gas from the United States - 1

The European Union is considering relaxing regulations on methane emissions to increase purchases of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the United States in an attempt to prevent a trade war, Reuters reported, citing its sources.

They said the adjustments, which would not weaken emissions regulations overall, would give an advantage to exporters from the United States. A European Commission spokesman declined to comment on the substance of the changes, noting that the EC "is in constant dialogue with industrialists on issues related to Community legislation."

Since the beginning of the year, Brussels has required oil and gas importers to monitor and inform European regulators about possible methane emissions related to energy purchases.

US President Donald Trump earlier said he intended to impose import duties of up to 10% on foreign goods, without making exceptions for allies, including the EU. He foresees such a scenario in case Brussels does not increase the volume of purchases of American oil and gas. Earlier, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that the EU is considering the possibility of committing to increasing purchases of American LNG to avoid the duties.
