Economist Kuzman Iliev and Assoc. Prof. Kosyo Stoychev - lecturer in “Regional Development and Economic Geography” at Sofia University “Kliment Ohridski”, commented in the studio of “Your Day” on Nova News on the tension in parliament regarding Bulgaria's entry into the eurozone.
“If you have a toxic economic environment in the long term and your treasury is in the red, sooner or later, even if you enter the eurozone, these problems will come out. The mistake is collective and now everyone is washing their hands,” Iliev believes. And he clarified that he is not a supporter of the zone. “It gives money to those governments that spend more than they have in taxes,” the economist claims.
“The fact is that we will not be able to reduce inflation to 1.5 per 100. The situation with the deficit, which may turn out to be higher than it should be even for 2024, is more dramatic. We have let go of the reins. The eurozone itself is a consequence. If we do things the right way, our inflation is low and our politicians know how to spend, there is no problem, we will adopt the euro”, said Kuzman Iliev.
According to Assoc. Prof. Stoychev said that our country is in a situation where everyone, including the executive branch, must understand that increasing income cannot be done through the budget. In his words, this must be done through business growth.
„When everything went wrong, they started talking about increasing taxes and the minimum wage once again. This is an additional addition of dangerous factors to the fire of inflationary pressure. In this way, we cannot get rid of what prevents us from getting closer to the eurozone. They are repeating the same mistake. A large amount of money has been spent, betting not only on a current deficit, but also on a future one”, he added. And he explained that there are no reforms in the services and state administration.
