Martin Dimitrov: If our own government does not play a double game, our chances for the eurozone next year are great - 1

“It is time for political action by the government - to request an extraordinary convergence report and for Bulgaria to guarantee its entry into the eurozone from January 1, 2026” This was stated to the media on behalf of “Democratic Bulgaria” PP-DB MP Martin Dimitrov, quoted by novini.bg.

According to him, the official Eurostat data on the average annual inflation for the last 12 months announced today are favorable for Bulgaria and the government no longer needs to hide or postpone, but to act. He called on the government, in addition to requesting a convergence report, to adopt the 2025 budget, along with the measures proposed by the DB to reduce spending.

Dimitrov reminded that together with PP-DB MPs last week he submitted a draft resolution to the National Assembly, which obliges the Council of Ministers to conduct an explanatory campaign about the benefits of introducing the euro and the experience of other countries. It should start on March 1 and be reported in detail to the parliament by July 1.

This campaign should respond to all malicious and hybrid attacks that suggest an increase in prices after the introduction of the euro, which has not happened in the countries that have introduced it, and compare Bulgaria with the other countries with a currency board - Estonia and Lithuania, in order to see that entering the eurozone leads to economic growth and does not cause extraordinary inflation, as certain people claim”, said the MP.

“If our own government does not play a double game, if it does not sabotage us, our chances for the eurozone next year are huge”, said Martin Dimitrov. Because, in his words, we meet the criteria, and Finance Minister Temenuzhka Petkova has also admitted in Brussels to our partners that we have a good legacy of stable fiscal policy, although there it says one thing, and in our country - another.

Defining the inflation data in Bulgaria as favorable, the economist is convinced that hardly anyone would care to which decimal point the rounding is made, because our indicators are close to the limit. According to him, a political conversation should now be held with the European Commission. “No one was returned for some commas, now is the time to politically work out our membership in the eurozone”, Martin Dimitrov concluded.
