The EU will react "firmly and immediately" against unjustified barriers to free and fair trade, a European Commission spokesman said in response to US President Donald Trump, BTA reported.

Trump announced yesterday that his administration will soon impose a 25 percent tariff on EU imports, world agencies reported.

The European Union is the largest free trade market in the world and it has been beneficial to the United States, the EC spokesman said after Trump's attacks that the EU was created to "screw up" USA.

"By creating a large and integrated single market, the EU has made trade easier, reduced costs for US exporters and harmonised standards and regulations across 27 member states", the EC said.

The European Commission called for "to work together to preserve these opportunities for our citizens and businesses", while warning that it would react "firmly and immediately against unjustified barriers to free and fair trade" imposed by the US President.

"Europe is for dialogue, openness and reciprocity", but will always defend European businesses, workers and consumers" against unjustified tariffs, the EC spokesman added.
