Prof. Petkov: A discussion about our official holidays is necessary, but it must be calm and respectful - 1

Freedom and liberation mean not just the rejection of a foreign power, but also the creation of a Bulgarian state. And this happened in Veliko Tarnovo in the first half of 1879, not so much with the adoption of the Constitution, but with the inauguration of the Bulgarian prince. This was said by the historian and lecturer at the St. Cyril and Methodius University of Technology” Prof. Dr. Petko Petkov in the program “Your Day” on NOVA NEWS.

„A discussion is needed about official holidays, about what they symbolize, what unites modern Bulgarians, but it must be calm and respectful”, said the historian.

„We have an ideal that dates back long before the San Stefano Peace Treaty and is purely Bulgarian. It includes from the Danube to Lake Ohrid and from Niš to Edirne. This is the national space of the Revival Bulgaria, institutionally recognized through the creation of the exarchate and its diocese, recognized by all powers at the Constantinople Conference. San Stefano Bulgaria is a deviation from this norm”, said the lecturer. He said that a Russian-English agreement from May 1878 was the basis of the final Berlin Treaty.

Prof. Petkov pointed out that this treaty may not be to the liking of many because it does not include all Bulgarian lands, but according to it, the construction of the new Bulgarian statehood begins.
