Stanislav Stoyanov from „Europe of Sovereign Nations“ , elected as an MEP from the "Vazrazhdane" quota in the European Parliament, participated in the discussions of the European Commission's draft regulation on „Protection of animals during transport and related operations“.
Stoyanov, shadow rapporteur on the European Parliament's opinion on the regulation, pointed out that the measures envisaged in it must be feasible for the Member States.
„Although improving transport conditions is a common priority, provisions that do not take into account the specificities of the Member States must be avoided. The proposed restrictions on the duration of transport, the calculation of the required space in vehicles, as well as temperature thresholds are controversial,“ Stoyanov said.
According to Stoyanov, the envisaged measures must be based on solid scientific evidence and information, taking into account the infrastructural features of the Member States, especially in peripheral areas or those with a predominantly mountainous terrain.
“I will defend policies that improve animal welfare without endangering the sustainability of the agricultural and transport sectors. A one-size-fits-all approach is not appropriate,“ Stoyanov stressed.
He added that the new rules must be pragmatic and fair for all Member States, as well as protect the interests of rural areas and the livestock sector.
