Ruse resident condemns Interior Ministry over false positive drug test - 1

Another case of falsely reported drug test results brings a driver into conflict with the judicial system. A 26-year-old man from Ruse received compensation of 500 leva after a drug test unreasonably reported the presence of benzodiazepines in his body.

The case dates back to May of last year, when Ersin Tefak was stopped for a routine check by law enforcement in Ruse. During the on-site test, the police reported a positive result for the presence of benzodiazepines in the young driver's body. Although he immediately gave a blood sample for laboratory analysis, his driver's license was revoked until the results were available.

Eight months later, laboratory tests categorically proved that the young man's sample did not contain any narcotics. As a result, the Administrative Court in Ruse ruled that the Regional Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs - Ruse should pay compensation of 500 leva to the wrongfully accused driver.

In an interview, Ersin Tefak revealed that initially even his relatives believed the results of the sample. Only after the numerous cases of false positive tests in the country became known, his family was convinced that he did not use narcotics.

A particularly dramatic moment for the young man was the fact that at that time he was preparing to get married. "It was difficult to convince my future wife and her parents that I was innocent," he told NOVA.

This case is becoming yet another documented example of problems with the reliability of initial drug tests used in roadside checks.
