The Ministry of Interior will propose to the government a set of measures to increase road safety.

This was said by the Minister of Interior Daniel Mitov in Veliko Tarnovo. They will indicate the identified problems and the corresponding solutions. Among the proposals are the installation of dividing posts on roads and sections identified as dangerous and with a concentration of traffic accidents, relief markings, road control and the constant presence of traffic police. Cameras must be purchased and installed, and the hope is that this will happen soon and that they will work. The toll system must be connected to the Ministry of Interior system, so that control over violators can be exercised through it as well. A change in the way fines are determined and paid will be requested in order to increase collection, with police officers being able to impose fines on the spot on aggressive drivers and those who do not comply with the Road Traffic Act. According to Minister Mitov, an effective measure would be the presence of unmarked Ministry of Interior vehicles to discipline these drivers.

We need to build certain ethical barriers in society that people do not cross on their own in order to reduce crimes, because the Ministry of Interior, even with a 100 percent detection rate, cannot prevent them from being committed, emphasized Daniel Mitov.

The Minister of Interior commented on President Radev's words that the war on the roads is caused by negligence and a sense of impunity. According to him, this is caused by the fact that there is no direction and has not been in the last four years. This period of political timelessness has also led to the hardening of the administrative institutional mechanisms that are called upon to deal with the implementation of the regulations, Mitov commented. Currently, the biggest task facing this government is to re-mobilize the resources of the administration and institutions to do their job as quickly and effectively as possible. We can hardly say that all regulations will be implemented immediately 100 percent, but at least they must be activated as quickly as possible and the maximum number of implementations achieved. The interactive map that the Ministry of Interior has, showing where the dangerous road sections are, should also be used, the minister added.

Mitov, who was familiarized with the report analyzing the activities of the Regional Directorate in Veliko Tarnovo for 2024, described it as objective, showing both successes and weaknesses, BTA reported. The meeting discussed what lies ahead, what the priorities for the Ministry of Interior are next year. Prevention was put first in every respect – in the distribution of narcotics, in road traffic injuries, in relation to telephone fraud and road safety.
