Elections are the strongest instrument of democracy and are undoubtedly subject to control.
This was stated to NOVA by the former constitutional judge Prof. Emilia Drumeva.
Prof. Drumeva commented on the inspection carried out by the Constitutional Court of how the vote was counted in 2204 polling stations.
„In this case, the control is whether the Election Code was complied with. As an outside observer – the procedure proceeded exactly according to the steps that are explicitly described in the Election Code”, said Prof. Drumeva.
She recalled that in 2009-2010 there was a similar case in the Constitutional Court. “I was on the bench of the court, I participated in the ruling. Then three members of parliament left the parliament, respectively three others entered”, said Prof. Drumeva.
”When data is collected that violations have been committed and positions and interests are affected, the tension increases. But ultimately, I think that the Constitutional Court did what was necessary, complied with the law and the Constitution. I am a big supporter of this institution”, commented Prof. Drumeva.
She also commented on the doubts and pressure on the Constitutional Court. ”When I was a judge - 9 years, there were almost no such cases on a personal level”, said Prof. Drumeva. And she recalled that she herself was elected from the quota of the National Assembly. “But there is certainly pressure. This puts judges in a difficult position. But being a constitutional judge – this is the highest position. It takes courage, strength”, said Prof. Drumeva.
