A truck driven by a Ukrainian crashed into a toll booth on the Egnatia Odos road near Polimilos Kozani Diodes. Two people died in the serious accident that occurred on April 15. The truck is owned by a Bulgarian company, reports Proto Thema, quoted by Focus.
Four more people were injured in the accident. Authorities are investigating the causes of the accident.
After toxicological tests, it was found that the 38-year-old driver had not consumed alcohol. According to ERT, the man told investigators: “I didn't see anything, I didn't understand what happened.“
The accident occurred in thick fog. The truck was traveling at high speed, hit a guardrail and ended up in the median, dragging two cars and the toll booth with it. Two people were killed. Their car caught fire upon impact. The couple, in their 70s, are said to have lived permanently in Switzerland and had arrived in Greece for the Easter holidays.
Among the injured are the 34-year-old driver of one of the cars and a 26-year-old taxi driver. The woman suffered minor head injuries. She had her back to the sunshade during the impact and also did not understand what had happened.
She was found in the wreckage of the checkpoint by traffic police and taken to hospital.
